Response to- Immigration: Obama vs. Congress
In the article "Immigration: Obama vs. Congress", by Patricia Smith, Obama has made laws that protect illegal immigrants, but did he have the power to do so? On one hand people argue that Obama did not have authority to do so, but on the other hand he has helped so many people and families get a better life. The author uses powerful quotes and statistics to support her side and create big ideas throughout the article.
One way the author creates ideas that show her opinion is by including quotes and statistics. She builds ideas about fear and fairness and also shows her opinion on the topic. Firstly, Smith says "There are 11 million undocumented immigrants in the states", this huge statistic is included to give the reader a sense of how big of a problem this was. Also, it helps persuade the reader by creating an image of how many people have had to struggle because the were illegal. In addition, Smith uses a quote from Jeff Passel of the Pew Hispanic Center, "But at any given moment, they face the possibility of being arrested and deported." Patricia Smith includes this line to show where she stands; although Obama may have done something he did not have the authority to do, it did more good than bad and helped a huge amount of people live freely. As well as that, the quote also shows how scary it is to be an illegal immigrant in the U.S. and how illegal immigrants have never been able to have an equal life because they have always been hiding in the shadows. It is clear to see how the author uses powerful quotes to state her side and also persuade the reader by creating imagery and emotion.
After reading this article, i feel like Obama made the right decision because it making the new law was for the good of millions of people. I think people who are against Obama's choice should consider what it is like to live as an illegal immigrant who always had to hide and live in fear.
